How to Help Your Autistic Child

There are many ways you can help support your child with autism that accomodates for various aspects of their condition.

Consider the following ways you can help your child:

  • Consistency with schedules and routines (meals, school, therapy, and sleep)
  • Rewards and praise for positive behaviors
  • Positive communication (verbal and nonverbal) that allows your child to express their feelings
  • Spending quality time to build bonds with your child in their interests
  • Professional therapies such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) and speech therapy

What are coping strategies for children with autism?

It is important to help your child develop their own coping skills as it pertains to the challenges they face with autism. There are various coping strategies, but their effectiveness will depend on the particular person and their personal needs and goals.

Some of these include:

  • Deep breathing exercises
  • Sensory breaks (quiet time)
  • Weighted blankets or vests
  • Noise-cancelling headphones
  • Yoga
  • Fidget toys
  • Exercise
  • Walking
  • Music
  • Prayer and meditation

How do you help an autistic child cope with change?

It is important that in order to reduce risk of emotional upset or outburst in your autistic child, you should prepare them for any schedule changes or breaks in their routine. If you can help them anticipate change ahead of time, it will allow time for them to utilize any coping strategies for accepting the coming change.

What should be the daily routine for an autistic child?

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all schedule for all autistic children, but whatever the daily routine is, it should be consistent and broken as little as possible. Again, if any changes are to be made in their schedule, whether it is temporary or permanent, it is in their best interest to inform them ahead of time so as to avoid upsetting them as much as you can.
