How to Know If You or a Loved One Qualifies for Developmentally Disabled or Autism Services
The idea of receiving a diagnosis can be scary, and sometimes you might not know where to start. Whether it’s for you or a loved one, you can reach out to your primary care physician to learn how to start the process of determining a disability or condition.
A developmental disability can be defined as a group of conditions that impair physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. In the U.S., around one in six children exhibit at least one developmental delay. For those with autism, there’s a general set of traits that an individual may have some or all of, including:
- Social difficulties (e.g., not picking up on social cues, intense anxiety in groups)
- Compulsive or repetitive behaviors (e.g. heading nodding, hand flapping)
- Communication differences (e.g., speech delay, non-vocal, bluntness)
- Sensitivities to certain stimuli causing intense reactions
- Poor eye contact
- Lack of understanding of others’ emotions or meanings behind words
In Florida, how “substantial disability” is defined plays a role in qualifying for services. According to the Florida Senate, “Individual with a disability” means a person who has a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities of the individual.”
