How to Know If You or a Loved One Qualifies for Developmentally Disabled or Autism Services
A developmental disability can be defined as a group of conditions that impair physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. In the U.S., around one in six children exhibit at least one developmental delay. For those with autism, there’s a general set of traits that an individual may have some or all of, including:
- Social difficulties (e.g., not picking up on social cues, intense anxiety in groups)
- Compulsive or repetitive behaviors (e.g. heading nodding, hand flapping)
- Communication differences (e.g., speech delay, non-vocal, bluntness)
- Sensitivities to certain stimuli causing intense reactions
- Poor eye contact
- Lack of understanding of others’ emotions or meanings behind words
Nevada state defines a “substantial disability” eligible for services as “a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more of the major life activities of the person; 2. A record of such an impairment; or. 3. Being regarded as having such an impairment.”
