How to Know If You or a Loved One Qualifies for Developmentally Disabled or Autism Services
Do you suspect you or a loved one may have an undiagnosed disability or condition? Discovering what’s going on under the surface can be a taxing process. A developmental disability can be defined as a group of conditions that impair physical, learning, language, or behavior areas. In the U.S., around one in six children exhibit at least one developmental delay.
Autism spectrum disorder has a shared set of traits that individuals will typically have on varying scales of severity. These include,
- Social difficulties (e.g., not picking up on social cues, intense anxiety in groups)
- Compulsive or repetitive behaviors (e.g. heading nodding, hand flapping)
- Communication differences (e.g., speech delay, non-vocal, bluntness)
- Sensitivities to certain stimuli causing intense reactions
- Poor eye contact
- Lack of understanding of others’ emotions or meanings behind words
Along with a professional diagnosis from a qualified doctor, states will vary in the definition of a “substantial disability” that’s eligible for services.
In California, these developmental disabilities are described as the presence of substantial functional constraints in three or more aspects of daily life, as assessed by a regional center and appropriate to the age of the person. These areas include,
- Self-care
- Receptive and expressive language
- Learning
- Mobility
- Self-direction
- Capacity for independent living
- Economic self-sufficiency
You can trust in the professionals and continue to have family involvement. Services provided by REA, such as ABA therapy, allow you or your loved ones to learn techniques that can be taken home and practiced. This way, learning doesn’t begin and end at our doors; it’s a continuous enrichment process.
