Can I Get Paid To Stay Home With My Autistic Loved One In California?

Yes, in California, you may be eligible to receive In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS), which provides financial aid for the long-term care of your autistic loved one. You must meet specific requirements for eligibility, and the money from IHSS is designed to help with expenses related to the individual with autism.

How Can An Autistic Person Receive IHSS?

To be eligible for IHSS, you must complete the application process and meet the program’s criteria. You’ll begin by filling out the application form. Once submitted, a county social worker will schedule an interview at your home to determine eligibility. They’ll assess the required services and how many hours the county can authorize to support them.

After adequately evaluating needs, you’ll either be approved as an IHSS caretaker or denied. If denied, you’ll be given a reason, and if approved, you’ll be notified of which services and the number of hours you’ve been authorized. However, a denied application could be due to missing information on the form. Make sure to thoroughly review your application before submitting it to confirm all details are accurate.

How Many Hours Can An Autistic Child Get On IHSS?

When a child is granted Protective Supervision by their legal guardian, they can receive 195 to 283 hours on IHSS. The maximum is 283 hours per month for autism, deemed a severe disability, while 195 is the maximum for autism that’s not severe.

How Much Does IHSS Pay For A Child With Autism?

IHSS will calculate payment for personal care and in-home services based on the number of hours of home care required and the established wage rate for the state. As of 2024, in California, the IHSS rate of pay for providers ranges from $16.00 to $19.05 per hour. The exact amount will vary depending on the county and services. You can review the pay rate per California county here.

How Are IHSS Payments Made?

IHSS payments can be made with Direct Deposit. Your IHSS paycheck is directly deposited into your checking or savings account or placed on your chosen pay card.

What Disqualifies You From Being An IHSS Provider?

The primary reasons IHSS applications may be rejected include:

  • Having a criminal record, specifically misdemeanor crimes involving violence. That said, a minor traffic violation wouldn’t disqualify you.
  • You don’t meet Medi-Cal income eligibility. The monthly income limit for the IHSS program is $1,677 for single applicants and $2,269 for couples.
  • Your loved one doesn’t qualify for SSI.
  • Inability to safely and effectively perform required service tasks.

If you’re unsure whether or not you qualify to be an IHSS provider, you can call Roman Empire Agency for more information. We offer SSI and Medicare assistance for our consumers and their family members, including help with applying, appealing, and filling out documentation from the Social Security Administration (SSA).

Can A Child With Autism Be Denied SSI?

Yes, in some cases, a child with autism may be denied SSI. Your child’s condition must meet the Social Security Administration’s criteria for developmental disabilities, and your monthly income and resources cannot exceed limits.
