Is Autism a Neurological Disorder?

May 22, 2024

Categories: Autism

You’re not alone in your search for answers regarding autism. It’s a complex condition that still requires much research today. But as research continues, so does our understanding of the nature of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and treatment that is healthy and beneficial for autistic children and adults alike.

  • Is autism a developmental or neurological disorder?
  • What is the neurological reason for autism?
  • Do neurologists treat autism?
  • Can a neurologist tell if you have autism?
  • Can you see autism in a brain scan?
  • What type of doctor is best for autism?

Is autism a developmental or neurological disorder?

Autism is actually both a developmental and a neurological disorder, affecting how an individual interacts with others, communicates, learns, and behaves. Symptoms and their severity vary widely from person to person, but autistic children tend to have difficulties with:

  • Socializing
  • Making eye contact
  • Understanding social cues and facial expressions
  • Repetitive behaviors
  • Restricted interests

What is the neurological reason for autism?

As mentioned before, there is much about autism that isn’t understood at this time, such as the exact neurological cause of the condition. However, research suggests that autism is linked to differences in the structure and function of the brain. Such differences may affect their nervous system, including the brain and spinal cord.

Some factors like genetics also play a role in certain developmental differences and changes, leading to ASD symptoms. An example would be fragile X syndrome which results in a higher risk of developing autism.

Do neurologists treat autism?

Although not the only specialists involved in diagnosing autism, they do specialize in the brain and nervous system, which is helpful in diagnosing and managing aspects of autism.

Neurologists are typically on a team of specialists which also include:

  • Developmental pediatricians
  • Psychologists
  • Speech therapists
  • Occupational therapists

Such a team ensures all aspects of the child’s development are considered and addressed.

Can a neurologist tell if you have autism?

Yes, neurologists help diagnose and treat autism by evaluating both behavior and developmental progress. Various tests are used to rule out other potential neurological conditions besides autism. They will observe how your child communicates and socializes with others and identify any indicators of the condition.

Can you see autism in a brain scan?

As of now, there isn’t a definitive brain scan to diagnose autism, although they sometimes show the differences in brain structure or function that are typically associated with autism. Brain scans are used as one piece of a broader diagnostic process that includes behavioral assessments and developmental evaluations.

What type of doctor is best for autism?

The best support for an autistic child is usually found in a diverse team of specialists based on your child’s specific needs. Psychologists, speech therapists, and occupational therapists are usually important roles in treating autism and promoting ongoing growth and success.

Early intervention is key, and finding a team as soon as possible will go a long way for your child.
