What is Nonverbal Autism?

April 3, 2024

Categories: Autism

When it comes to navigating the challenges that often accompany Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), it is especially important for parents to understand the particularities of nonverbal autism.

This type of ASD certainly affects the way your child communicates with you and others, as well as how they engage and interact with the world around them. Understanding nonverbal autism will give you the insight you need to better support your child’s ongoing development and social integration.

  • What are nonverbal behaviors of autism?
  • Can a nonverbal autistic child learn to speak?
  • What causes non-speaking autism?
  • When does an autistic child start to speak?

What are nonverbal behaviors of autism?

Nonverbal behaviors in autism are exhibited in various actions used as replacements for speech. Your child may use hand and arm gestures, body language, or other nonverbal cues instead of verbalizing their thoughts or feelings.

Some of these behaviors may also include avoiding eye contact with you, feeling uncomfortable, or having difficulty with social communication in general.

Can a nonverbal autistic child learn to speak?

Given their current nonverbal condition, you may wonder whether your child will ever speak. However, with effective early interventions, such as speech therapy provided by experienced speech-language pathologists (SLPs) and the use of assistive technology, from sign language to speech-generating devices, your child may be able to develop their speaking skills over time.

What causes non-speaking autism?

There are many factors that go into what causes non-speaking conditions, from genetics, environment, etc., that all influence the development of the brain and its effect on speech. But there is no conclusive evidence about a single cause for such conditions, let alone ASD itself.

Thankfully, early intervention and professional treatment are available for your child to help and support their development and overcome the challenges they face in their condition.

When does an autistic child start to speak?

There is no single timeline that applies to all children as each develops uniquely and reaches different stages of their development according to their particular journey. Neurotypical children, on average, start speaking by about 18 months, while autistic children may not use words until 3 years or older. It is good to respect the unique developmental journey of your child, as with all children, and to consult your trusted pediatrician with any questions or concerns.

What do nonverbal autistic kids like to do?

Autistic kids who are nonverbal enjoy activities that don’t rely on verbal communication. Sensory activities can be pretty popular and exciting for them, as well as drawing or playing with interesting devices or technology that require no speech. These activities can also go beyond mere entertainment and can be educational as well!
